8 Tips to Help Your On Camera Performance
Millions of people have it: fear of public speaking. Throw in a video cam and the stress level goes up even more. Here are 8 solid tips on how to calm down and win applause.
PREPARE – Please don’t think you can just “wing-it” or “ad-lib” your way through a video performance or speech. Think about your message. What do you want to say? Why should your audience listen?
RESEARCH – If you are going to teach someone how to do something just take some time to make sure you know what you are talking about. See what other “experts” have to say on the subject. Reading, learning is a life-long process.
ORGANIZE – Write an outline. Make sure your video or speech has a beginning, middle and end. Write some notes, list some bullet points.
PRACTICE – Once you are ready with your content please take some time to practice. Use your phone to record yourself. Practice in front of the mirror. Practice in the car on your way to work.
SMILE – Always, always try to smile. If your subject is serious, smile when you introduce yourself.
BE REAL – Be yourself. Don’t be a phony. Don’t try to copy someone you really like. Develop your own unique style.
CONNECT – Pretend you are speaking to one person. When writing my stories and presenting my live shots, I used to image I was speaking to my Mom or Dad. I felt safe and confident when explaining complex political stories to them. Try to connect with one member of the audience and with the camera.
STAY ON TOPIC – Stick to your notes. You’ll be glad you did!
