Democracy Versus Republic: The United States is a “REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY”

The United States is both a republic and a democracy.
Here is why.
In the United States, we are empowered to participate in a representative political system. We go to the polls and vote. Then the person with the most votes wins.
That is Democracy. Majority Rules.
But! And this is a big But. The people we elect REPRESENT all of us. Even if you did not vote for them.
A Republic protects the minority from Mob Rule.”

Confusion or Robots?

At some point in time, people because confused about the kind of country they are living in.
Every time I talk about Democracy on TikTok, somebody or some Robot comments that we-“the United States” is a Republic.
When I have time, my response is always, “We are Both!”
I’m here to help clear it up. I don’t make the rules. And I don’t make this stuff up. I remain a political reporter.
I’ll cite my sources.

The United States is Both a Republic and a Democracy.

According to Dictionary.com, here is the definition of a Republic:

  • “a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them.”

From Dictionary.Com, this is the definition of Democracy:

  • “government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or their elected agents under a free electoral system.”

We are not a pure democracy because our founding fathers created three branches of government—Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.

Key Takeaways: Republic vs. Democracy

  • Republics and democracies both provide a political system in which citizens are represented by elected officials who are sworn to protect their interests.
  • In a pure democracy, laws are made directly by the voting majority leaving the rights of the minority largely unprotected.
  • In a republic, laws are made by representatives chosen by the people and must comply with a constitution that specifically protects the rights of the minority from the will of the majority.
  • The United States, while basically a republic, is best described as a “representative democracy.”

UNQUOTE. PERIOD.

If we were a pure Democracy, the Supreme Court would not have had the power to overturn a woman’s right to medical privacy. Because the MAJORITY WANTS ABORTION RIGHTS.

Finally, my last personal comment. Here is the definition of Fascism.

Fascism: a way of organizing a society in which a government ruled by a dictator controls the people’s lives and in which people are not allowed to disagree with the government; very harsh control or authority.

Let’s not go there.
