The Eighth Hearing of the January 6 Committee Investigating the Attack on the U.S. Capitol documented what President Trump did while two women died and Capitol Police and rioters were injured.
As bad as it was, it could have been worse.
Using videotape, sworn testimony, and subpoenaed documents, the Committee presented a timeline showing what happened on Capitol Hill and what Trump was doing or not doing.
Here’s the basic timeline.
At 1:10 p.m., Trump ended his speech at the Ellipse
By 1:24 p.m., Trump was comfortably settled in the White House dining room just next door to the Oval Office.
1:25 to 4:00 pm according to White House records subpoenaed by the Congressional Investigators he was alone, watching TV.
1:39 pm Trump called Rudy Giuliani, one of his lawyers. That call lasted four minutes, according to Giuliani’s phone records which were obtained by the committee.
Early in the riot, on the Capitol Steps, the first of two women died. She was trampled to death. By the mob Trump unleashed.
Shortly after 2:00 pm, Vice President Pence left the Senate Chamber, as it was being surrounded by rioters. We saw a video showing Pence’s Secret Service detail as they struggled to decide what to do, and which way to go.
2:13 Trump and Giuliani had another phone chat half an hour later. Two minutes after the call ended at 2:13 p.m., enraged rioters who had beaten police officers and gassed them with caustic chemicals made their way to the Capitol building’s doors and broke windows to get inside.
Shortly rioters breached the Capitol the second woman was killed, inside the building.
She was shot once in the shoulder by an unidentified Capitol police lieutenant while attempting to crawl through a broken window leading to the Speaker’s Lobby outside the US House of Representatives’ chamber.
2:24 p.m. ET, eleven minutes after rioters breached the Capitol building, according to the committee, Trump tweeted that Pence “didn’t have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution.”
That is when the crowds both outside the Capitol and inside the Capitol surged.” They overtook police.
2:26 p.m. ET — Pence was evacuated to a loading dock under the Senate plaza.
2:38 p.m After Trump had discussions with his daughter Ivanka, he was finally convinced to put out a tweet that would serve as a superficial attempt to intervene. The tweet sent out at 2:38 p.m. said,
“Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!”
3:58 p.m., the president continued to watch Fox News as the cable network reported that the FBI and D.C. National Guard had been deployed to the Capitol building.
Finally,
4:17 p.m. Trump posts a video on social media telling rioters that he knows their pain and hurt. “We had an election that was stolen from us. It was a landslide election, and everyone knows it, especially the other side. “Go home. We love you, you’re very special.”
Some interesting video,
According to never-before-seen outtakes aired at this hearing, Trump refused to say the election was over in a Jan. 7 speech, according to never-before-seen outtakes aired at this hearing.
